Biography

Dr. Garcia is a graduate of the University of Notre Dame. Following this, he received his medical degree from Florida State University College of Medicine and then completed his internship and residency in Internal Medicine at Shands Hospital at the University of Florida. Dr. Garcia then completed a fellowship in Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine at University of Alabama at Birmingham where he worked in the laboratories of Dr. Steven M. Rowe and Dr. W. Edward Swords in the Gregory Fleming James Cystic Fibrosis Research Center.

Dr. Garcia’s primary research focus addresses the course of chronic airway colonization by atypical pathogens with focus on Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Non-tuberculous mycobacteria. Dr. Garcia's received the MUSC-K12 Clinician-Scientist Scholar Award for his proposal "STUDIES-NTM" (Study to Understand Disease course, Inflammation, and Endotype South Carolinians with NTM). This funding has led to the development of a unique biorepository and registry of patients with NTM and bronchiectasis which Dr. Garcia and his collaborators utilize to better understand monitoring of disease state and therapeutic response for which there are critical knowledge gaps in the care of these patients. In addition to his funding through the K12, Dr. Garcia is grant funded through the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation and is a participant in several interventional and observational clinical trials related to Cystic Fibrosis.
