Dr. Khatib completed fellowships in Craniomaxillofacial Trauma and Reconstructive Surgery as well as Head and Neck Oncologic and Microvascular Reconstructive Surgery.
Dr. Khatib’s clinical interests include the treatment of Benign and Malignant tumors of the head and neck, treatment of facial trauma, orthognathic surgery as well as the complete reconstruction of oral and maxillofacial region using microvascular tissue transfer, dental and zygomatic implants. His unique interest in pathology, dental implants, microvascular surgery, 3D printing, prosthodontics and orthognathic surgery coalesced in 2016, when he was part of the first team on the west coast to successfully perform a “Jaw in a Day” procedure.
This remarkable surgery involves removal of the jaw for treatment of a tumor; followed by reconstruction with a vascularized fibula free flap, simultaneous placement of dental implants and a dental prosthesis using custom hardware and 3D printing – all in one surgery. We are excited to announce that he performed the first two "Jaw in A Day" procedures in South Carolina, with one of them being the youngest patient ever to receive the procedure on her lower jaw.
Dr. Khatib has authored and co-authored several articles, abstracts and book chapters in the OMFS, Facial Plastic Surgery, and Head and Neck literature on the use of custom 3D printing, intraoperative navigation and CTs for the treatment of oncologic and traumatic defects. A recent publication on treatment of self-inflicted gunshot wounds to the facial skeleton titled “Functional Anatomic Computer Engineered Surgery – FACES protocol” garnered international attention after an American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial surgeons-sponsored press release.
He completed his Bachelor’s of Medical Science and Doctor of Dental Surgery at the University of Alberta, Canada, followed by a Medical Degree at the University of California, Davis. He then completed a general surgery internship and Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery residency and chief year at the University of California, San Francisco. He has been the recipient of numerous awards including the Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry Dean’s honor roll, the Dr. G.H. Gibb Memorial Prize, The Harry Alexander Gilchrist Prize and the Whip Mix Best of the Best in Prosthodontics award for his interest in Prosthodontic rehabilitation.
