Biography

Dr. Tanya N. Turan trained in neurology and vascular neurology at Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia and was recruited to MUSC in 2008 as an academic clinician. She is a Professor of Neurology with tenure and the Director of the Stroke Neurology Division.

Dr. Turan’s research activities are focused on understanding the roles of traditional and novel risk factors in stroke-related atherosclerosis. She has been awarded several NIH grants to study novel MR imaging techniques for identifying high-risk, intracranial plaque features. In addition, her research includes directing and overseeing of the intensive risk factor management in the NIH-funded, multi-center clinical trials "Stenting and Aggressive Medical Management for Prevention of Recurrent stroke in Intracranial Stenosis (SAMMPRIS)" and "Carotid Revascularization Endarterectomy and Stenting Trial — 2 (CREST 2)."

Dr. Turan is also the director of MUSC's NIH-StrokeNet Regional Coordinating Center, "Southeast Collaborative Alliance for Stroke Trials (SE-CoAST)." She has published numerous papers and has presented her research at local, national and international conferences. Her clinical interests are in secondary prevention of stroke.
