My name is Brad Wood and I had bariatric surgery on Aug 28, 2018.

At the time of surgery, I weighed 304 pounds, had type 2 diabetes, sleep apnea, high cholesterol and my legs/knees hurt a lot. I had tried different diets, medicines and exercise plans … but they did not work. At the recommendation of my personal physician, I came to MUSC and spoke to Dr. Byrne. After making the decision to move forward with the gastric bypass surgery, I then had to endure the whole insurance process, which took months before I was approved.

The surgery went smoothly, but my recovery period was difficult. I contracted pneumonia and had an abscess in my stomach during the first 30 days following the surgery. It was a trying time, but I did recover fully. In the past 10 months, I have lost over 90 pounds, with my weight averaging between 210-212 pounds. I feel GREAT! No more diabetes, sleep apnea or high cholesterol, and the legs/knees also feel much better.

I am thankful for a second chance at taking care of myself and understanding how much better I feel today!
