My name is Maria Lucks Howard, I have been on my weight loss journey for 6 years. After I had my last child, I was the biggest I have ever been, weighing 307 lbs. I was on a mission to lose weight. I would lose 10 pounds here and 30 pounds there. My doctor put me on some weight loss pills and I eventually lost 60 pounds. But per usual, my asthma started acting up and I was placed on steroids again. Then, all of the weight (plus more) would come back. Being a chronic asthmatic, I was literally killing myself. I needed to take my health back into my control. I researched the gastric bypass and found out that MUSC had the best bariatric program around. When I started the process, my highest weight was 317 pounds. I am beyond grateful for the doctors and staff at MUSC, as they have made this process easy. The team was there with me every step of the way. I am now 120 pounds lighter and I’ve never felt better in my life. I see food differently, I have a personal trainer, I do yoga, and I meal prep every week. Most of all, I’m finally living for myself, my children, and my husband. I love the journey I’m on and there’s no going back.
