Scott and Dr. Rana Pullatt

Scott had the Duodenal Switch procedure with Dr. Rana Pullatt on May 20th of this year. Prior to having bariatric surgery, Scott weighed 439 pounds. Over the course of the past 6 months, he has lost close to 150 pounds and states that he “feels like a new person”. The above picture is Scott with Dr. Pullatt at his 6-month follow-up visit in clinic. This is what Scott has to say about his weight loss journey with the MUSC Bariatric Surgery Program:

“Prior to having surgery, I was close to 500 pounds at my heaviest, I never felt full and I was becoming immobile. Six months after undergoing the Duodenal Switch procedure, I am enjoying my life again! I have a completely new wardrobe, I have more energy and I feel healthy. My best piece of advice to anyone who is struggling with obesity is to be honest with your healthcare professionals. Surgery was the best option for me. If you are considering it, talk to your doctor – it saved my life and it could save yours!”

The Biliopancreatic Diversion with Duodenal Switch (also just simply known as the Duodenal Switch) is one of three bariatric procedures offered at MUSC to treat obesity. To summarize, the Duodenal Switch results in long-term weight loss through three major mechanisms:

  • It removes about 70-80 percent of your stomach
  • It bypasses most of your small intestine (ingested food does not flow through the bypassed part)
  • It reroutes digestive enzymes from your pancreas to an area much farther down in your small intestine
