Even fast food chains are jumping on the ‘meatless’ bandwagon with meatless sandwiches and burgers. As we learn more and more about the environmental effects associated with meat production, nutrition professionals tend to see this as a positive step forward for the fast food industry. With that said, not all meatless products are created equal. While we commend their efforts, some of these products remain high in sodium, saturated fat and overall calories, which can negatively impact our health. For example, the Impossible™ Whopper® from Burger King packs in 630 calories, 34 grams of fat and 1080mg of sodium (almost as many calories and grams of fat as the traditional Whopper®, but with even more sodium). When you are comparing fast food meals, a good general rule of thumb is to choose an option that has a higher protein to fat ratio to ensure it is a LEAN protein source. For example, the BK VEGGIE® Burger has ½ the amount of calories and about ¼ the grams of fat (in addition to less sodium) compared to the Impossible™ Whopper® making it the leaner alternative so you can Eat This, Not That!
