I can honestly say that last year at this time weight loss surgery wasn’t even on my mind. It actually wasn’t until August when my son decided to get married in Cancun.  As luck would have it, the airlines lost my luggage. It was the wedding day and I didn’t have a dress – I went down to the four shops in the resort lobby and not one dress fit me. I thought I was going to have to wrap myself in a sheet at my son’s wedding! Luckily, the airlines saved the day and arrived with my luggage. But as I squeezed into my dress from home, I realized that I wasn’t happy in this dress either, and I decided it was time to do something.

I came home and immediately started calling hospitals. I had tried every diet known to man over the course of my life, and now at 70 years old, I had to do something bigger than a diet.  I had watched a few seminars about weight loss surgery, and quickly decided that MUSC was the place for me. One visit with the MUSC Metabolic & Bariatric Surgery Program convinced me that this team would be the cheerleaders who I desperately needed! Meeting Dr. Byrne and reading about his credentials made me feel like I was in the best possible hands.

I was worried about being 70 and my body parts being “too old” for this type of surgery. But the bariatric team made me feel that this fear was unfounded. I went through all the necessary tests, and in January of 2020, I had the Sleeve Gastrectomy!

It now seems like a dream. I was in and out of the hospital in 24 hours. I felt great! The dietitians have helped me to learn how and what to eat in order to stay on this healthy track. I can breathe better, walk longer, play with my grandchildren longer and fit into clothes! I have stopped all cholesterol medicine and 2 of my blood pressure pills.

It has been 6 months and I am down 50 lbs. I hope to lose another 30 lbs within the next 6 months or so. The bariatric department at MUSC has been my guiding light. I find myself wanting to talk to others who struggle with their weight and let them know that there is a tool that can help! My only regret is not doing this sooner!
