Dedicated Primary Care for Cancer Patients

Here at MUSC Hollings Cancer Center, we understand your needs go beyond your cancer care. Just because you or your loved one has cancer doesn’t mean other medical concerns go away. During a patient’s cancer treatment, the primary care physician is an important resource for cancer and noncancer-related illnesses, pre and postoperative care, recognizing and managing care complications, and much more. That’s why we have a dedicated primary care physician right here in our cancer center. This service is available exclusively for our oncology patients who are newly diagnosed or undergoing treatment.

Do I need a primary care provider while I see an oncologist at Hollings Cancer Center?

• To allow your oncologist to focus wholly on your cancer treatment, we would recommend including a primary care provider on your care team. The primary care provider can help with managing acute general wellness, managing acute illnesses, as well as supporting patients who need chronic care for diseases such as diabetes.

What if I already have a primary care physician?

• If you are local to Charleston and already have a primary care doctor, you can absolutely keep your current physician.
• If you travel for your treatment and would like to see our in-house primary care physician temporarily, you can keep your current primary care physician and see our primary care oncology provider during your treatment.

What kind of care will our primary care oncology doctor provide?
