Social Work

Receiving a cancer diagnosis can be challenging and frightening. At MUSC Hollings Cancer Center, our social workers are professionally trained in the treatment of social and emotional concerns that cancer patients often face.

Our licensed social workers provide support services to patients, families and caregivers facing the impact of their medical diagnosis. Our team is skilled in addressing the counseling, support and advocacy needs of patients with cancer. All of our oncology social workers are licensed and hold a Masters Degree in Social Work.

Social workers begin with a thorough assessment of the client, situation and available resources. They have experience in locating and navigating resources and can help connect clients with the services and supports they need.

Social workers offer support in a variety of areas, including:

  • Adjusting to diagnosis
  • Navigating the health care system
  • Community resources — Local, state and federal
  • Caregiver support
  • Financial concerns
  • Emotional support
  • Substance abuse and mental health resources
  • Transportation and lodging options
  • Grievance counseling referrals
