Quality & Safety
Dr. Scheurer describes MUSC’s commitment to Quality & Safety.
Why we measure this
Catheter-Associated Urinary Tract Infections (CAUTI) are infections that can occur as the result of having a catheter in the bladder. Since these infections can be serious, we closely monitor these and strive for a goal of zero.
How we measure this
We measure our CAUTI infection rate using a risk-adjusted Standard Infection Ratio (SIR) that compares our actual rate against our expected rate based on the performance of other U.S. hospitals.
What we do to improve
MUSC providers are very careful putting in and taking care of these catheters, as well as taking them out as soon as possible. The Centers for Disease Control offer information on what patients can do to prevent CAUTI.
