Interpreter Training Center

Who We Are, What We Do

MUSC Health recognized there was a lack of opportunities to secure continuing education credits, ongoing training and development for both medical interpreters and translators across the state of South Carolina. In light of this, we established the MUSC Health Medical Interpreter Training Center. The goal of the center is to provide ongoing training opportunities for medical interpreters throughout the state and around the east coast of the United States.

The Medical Interpreter Training Center offers a range of services including monthly continuing education (CE) workshops that are pre-approved. Also, we are an approved testing site for the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf, Inc (RID), Commission for Healthcare Interpreters (CCHI), the National Board of Certification for Medical Interpreters (NBCMI), and American Translators Association (ATA).

There are several ongoing trainings that are offered via the Medical Interpreter Training Center, including Bridging the Gap, a foundational medical interpretation training program. In addition, we offer national certification preparation courses for medical interpreters, one-on-one practice/mentorship practicum and diagnostic testing for medical interpreters preparing for national certification. The center is a venue where medical interpreters and translators can gain knowledge and learn from one another, building a network of professionals ready for any situation.

Mission

Our mission is to provide insightful and practical development opportunities for multilingual individuals, by equipping them with the tools and resources needed to improve their linguistic, cultural, and interpreting skill sets.

Vision

Improve the effectiveness of care/service delivery to culturally diverse and limited English proficiency populations across the state of South Carolina through competently trained/certified medical interpreters and translators. Help both patient and provider to feel more empowered, engaged, and satisfied by outcomes within the medical encounter.
