MUSC Health Lab & Testing Options
MUSC is continuing to expand testing offerings and locations throughout South Carolina in partnership with care providers and community leaders throughout the state. In response to COVID-19 and South Carolina’s unique needs, several testing and care options have been developed.
If you are currently experiencing a possible respiratory illness or “COVID-19-like” symptoms, please access the MUSC Health Virtual Urgent Care online platform. Use the promo code “COVID19” for a free screening. There are no age restrictions on who may be screened. While the screening is free, specimen collections and subsequent laboratory processing will be billed to the patients’ insurance provider or considered self-pay. The MUSC Health financial assistance team is available to patients encountering difficulties with payment.
As MUSC continues to monitor COVID-19, testing, locations and schedules are subject to change.
MUSC Health Preoperative patients
If you are an MUSC Health patient with an upcoming procedure, you may be asked to complete COVID-19 testing prior to your scheduled appointment. An MUSC Health care team member will contact you directly to coordinate the details of this process and where to go for testing based on your specific case.
COVID-19 Diagnostic Testing (via nasal swab)
Diagnostic COVID-19 testing (via nasal swab) is known as “COVID-19 PCR.” Currently, all diagnostic tests are done by a medical professional by taking a small amount of nasal aspirate with a nose swab. All patients can expect to receive results within 72 hours.

Antibody Testing (via blood specimen)
This is often referred to as a serology test, immunity test or immune test. It determines whether you have developed antibodies to Sars-CoV2, the virus that causes COVID-19.
Individuals who wish to be tested can use MUSC Virtual Urgent Care (hyperlink to musc.care) to complete a COVID-19 (coronavirus) visit. Select “yes” on the additional information question and enter #covidimmunity in the comments section. Virtual Care will determine eligibility for serologic testing. Eligible candidates will be prompted through MUSC MyChart to visit a designated lab for a blood draw. Testing is available at select locations in the Charleston, Florence and Lancaster divisions. Results will be available in MyChart within 48 to 72 hours. Read more about antibody testing.
