Membership Benefits
Members benefit from a variety of programs, services, resources that include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Teaching Portfolio - Develop and enhance teaching credentials for tenure and promotions, share areas of teaching/education interests and expertise, and connect with collaborators.
- Mentoring Opportunities – Acquire mentors or serve as a mentor to enhance knowledge and skills in targeted domains of teaching and education.
- Faculty Development and Leadership – Participate in and/or lead faculty development sessions in teaching and other educational activities, collaborate with others through special programs and educational research projects.
- Peer Review and Guidance – Receive collegial evaluation and feedback to improve quality and effectiveness of teaching.
- Collaborative Projects – Interact within community of educators in which members can collaborate with colleagues who share common interests in teaching, education, and the ongoing development of excellence and educational scholarship.
Membership Categories
The Academy of Medical Educators has two membership categories as described below: Developing Teacher and Teaching Scholar. Qualifications for each category vary according to level of experience and record of achievement in the following educational domains:
- Teaching Activity
- Curriculum and/or Assessment Development
- Advising and Mentoring
- Educational Leadership and Administration
- Educational Research and Scholarship
To apply for membership, choose the appropriate membership category that best fits your involvement, achievements, and professional development goals in teaching and education.
Developing Teacher: This category is appropriate for faculty, fellows, residents, and education specialists who are either new to teaching or interested in pursuing a career in teaching and educational scholarship. Members in this category will work on developing their education portfolio through faculty development and mentorship in teaching and/or other educational domains. After 3 years of active membership, members in this category will be promoted to Teaching Scholar.

Teaching Scholar: This category is appropriate for faculty and education specialists who are involved in teaching and/or related educational activities. Members in this category have experience and a record of achievement in at least one educational domain. Teaching Scholars are expected to fulfill the yearly requirements to maintain active membership.

To apply, please indicate the membership category and provide the following via email to Dr. Paul McDermott:
1. Personal Statement: Describe your interests and career goals in medical education and provide a brief teaching philosophy.
2. Curriculum Vitae
3. Educational Domains: In addition to your personal statement and CV, the educational domains listed below are designed to serve as an education portfolio. Members can develop and enhance their education portfolio by using the standard spreadsheets developed by the AME (xls).
- Teaching Activity
- Curriculum and/or Assessment Development
- Advising and Mentoring
- Educational Leadership and Administration
- Educational Research and Scholarship
