Objectives Describe the key pathophysiologic mechanisms underlying adult sickle cell disease—including hemolysis, vaso-occlusion, endothelial dysfunction, inflammation, and ischemic organ injury—and correlate these processes with clinical manifestations and progressive organ damage; Compare and apply current and emerging disease-modifying therapies for adults with sickle cell disease by selecting mechanism-based treatment strategies tailored to patient phenotype, comorbidities, and risk profile; Identify and interpret early clinical indicators, laboratory biomarkers, and imaging findings associated with disease progression, and implement evidence-based, multidisciplinary interventions to reduce complications and improve long-term outcomes.
