Biography

Teresa Betts Cobau's doctoral project has evolved into a sustainable program in Haiti. For the past five years (as of 2018), she has partnered with the Midwives for Haiti organization to train Haitian physicians and midwives to perform cervical cancer screening. Cervical cancer is the highest oncological mortality rate in women between the ages of 25 through 55 because routine Pap smears are not available to the majority of Haitian women due to limited infrastructures. The training of Haitian healthcare providers is based on the Johns Hopkins cervical cancer screening protocols using acetic acid (vinegar), portable colposcopy (MobileODT device) and cryosurgery.
