Biography

Joe Schoepf, M.D., FACR, FAHA, FSABI, FSCCT, is a professor with appointments in radiology, cardiovascular medicine, and pediatrics at the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC) in Charleston, South Carolina. At MUSC, Dr. Schoepf serves as the Director of the Division of Cardiovascular Imaging and Vice Chair for Research in the Department of Radiology and Radiological Science as well as Assistant Dean for Clinical Research in the College of Medicine.

Dr. Schoepf, a native of Austria, graduated from the medical school of the University of Munich, Germany. After his residency he assumed a position at Brigham and Women’s Hospital, Harvard Medical School, in Boston, which he held from 2001 to 2004. Dr. Schoepf is certified in diagnostic radiology by the American and Austrian Specialty Boards as well as in cardiovascular CT by the American College of Radiology. His main clinical and scientific interest is the use of advanced CT, MRI, image post-processing, and artificial intelligence techniques for diagnosing disorders of the heart and lung.

Dr. Schoepf is the Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Thoracic Imaging and has been serving on the editorial boards of many other scientific journals including Radiology, the Journal of the American Heart Association, theAmerican Journal of Roentgenology, the Chinese Journal of Academic Radiology, and Academic Radiology. He has given over 400 invited lectures internationally, has authored more than 600 articles in peer reviewed scientific journals, over 20 book chapters, and five books.

Dr. Schoepf has been serving as chairman of several committees of the American College of Radiology and other professional societies. He is an honorary member of the Hungarian Radiology Society, of the Société Canadienne-Française de Radiologie, as well as of the European Society of Cardiovascular Imaging, and received Honorary Professorship from Nanjing University, China.

Dr. Schoepf has been named among the top 10 cardiovascular imagers worldwide by Medical Imaging Magazine. He has been continuously listed among the Best Doctors in America® since 2007 and was ranked as Most Influential in Radiology by RT Image Magazine. In 2013 he was selected as the “Most Influential Radiology Researcher” by AuntMinnie.com.
