Women Against Diabetes through Empowerment (WADE) Program

Empowering Women to Prevent and Manage Diabetes

The Women Against Diabetes through Empowerment (WADE) program is a year-long, community-focused health initiative. Led by MUSC in partnership with Fetter Health Care Network, WADE is designed to support women in the Lowcountry who are at risk for or currently living with diabetes.

Whether you have prediabetes, Type 1 or Type 2 diabetes, or a family history of diabetes, WADE offers the support and tools to help you take control of your health.

Who Should Join WADE?

WADE is open to women aged 18 and older who have one or more of the following:

  • Type 1 or Type 2 diabetes
  • Prediabetes
  • Overweight or obesity
  • History of gestational diabetes
  • Family history of diabetes

What WADE Offers

WADE uses a holistic, evidence-based approach led by a multidisciplinary care team that may include:

  • Endocrinologists and primary care physicians
  • Diabetes educators
  • Registered dietitians and nutritionists
  • Clinical pharmacists
  • Nurse practitioners

Through personalized care plans, patients are guided on nutrition, physical activity, anti-obesity medication if appropriate, and behavioral support. The program includes:

  • A free women's weight management clinic
  • Access to diabetes prevention and education resources
  • Referrals to insurance-aligned partner programs, like CDC Diabetes Prevention Programs
  • Peer support through accountability partnerships and coaching
