MUSC Health will bill your primary and secondary health care plan on your behalf. However, you are ultimately responsible for the services provided.  You may be billed if your health care plan does not process in a timely manner.  Further follow up with your insurance will be your responsibility.

Self-Pay Collections Process

MUSC will send you monthly statements for any unpaid balances for up to 120 days after treatment. During this 120-day period, we will contact you four times via statements, phone calls, and/or text messages/eā€mails to remind you about your unpaid balance. During this period, you are expected to do one of the following:

If the balance due is unpaid or otherwise unresolved after the 120-day period, your account may be sent to a collection agency for further review. MUSC will send a total of four (4) statements and a Final Notice letter prior to sending a patient to collections.

You have the right to receive, upon request, an itemized statement that provides details of charges related to your visit(s). You can request an itemized statement or ask questions by submitting a billing inquiry via your MUSC MyChart account or by calling Customer Service Monday through Friday, from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. by calling 843-792-2311 or 800-598-0624.

Billing for COVID-19 Testing

MUSC Health is performing the COVID-19/Coronavirus diagnostic testing. The pricing for these tests ranges from $50 to $150 and will be billed to your insurance carrier. Based on the recent CARES Act, MUSC Health does not anticipate insured patients to have an outstanding balance for this test. Uninsured/self-pay patients’ out-of-pocket expense will not exceed $75 for the COVID-19 diagnostic testing. Please contact 843-792-2311 or 800-598-0624 with questions regarding your bill.

The Transparency of Hospital Charges Rule requires MUSC Health to provide the hospital charge master code assigned to the COVID-19 diagnostic test. The test code U0002 is assigned the charge master code 85212470 HB SASR COV 2 B PCR and the price assigned is $50. The test code U0004 is assigned the charge master code of 85212471 HB SARS COV-2 HIGH THROUGHPUT and the price assigned is $150.
