International Travel Health Clinic

Led by specially trained pharmacists from the MUSC College of Pharmacy, our clinic provides destination-specific vaccines, preventive medications, and personalized guidance — all in one visit. Schedule 4–8 weeks before departure.

Why choose MUSC Health for international travel health?

MUSC Health is home to one of South Carolina's few DHEC-certified yellow fever vaccination centers — an official designation that allows our clinic to administer yellow fever vaccines required for international entry. Our International Travel Health Clinic is led by pharmacists specially trained in travel medicine through the MUSC College of Pharmacy, ensuring every consultation reflects current CDC and WHO guidelines.

We serve travelers of all ages — from infants and children to older adults — including families, students studying abroad, missionaries, business travelers, and adventure travelers. In a single appointment, you receive vaccines, preventive medications, and written destination-specific guidance. Post-travel follow-up care is also available when illness develops after your return.

Prepare for safe, healthy international travel

A pre-travel health consultation is one of the most important steps you can take before any international trip. Our travel health pharmacists review your full health history and itinerary to create a personalized plan that accounts for your destination, planned activities, current medications, and any underlying health conditions. Recommendations are grounded in current CDC and WHO guidelines and updated to reflect destination-specific risks at the time of your visit.

Travel-specific vaccines, preventive medications, travel health kits, and written safety guidance are coordinated in a single appointment whenever possible. Schedule your visit 4–8 weeks before your departure date to allow adequate time for vaccines to take full effect and preventive medications to begin.

Common vaccines offered include Hepatitis A & B, Typhoid, Yellow Fever, Japanese Encephalitis, Meningococcal, Rabies (pre-exposure), MMR, Tdap, Influenza, and COVID-19. Yes. MUSC Health's International Travel Health Clinic is an official yellow fever vaccination center certified by the South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control (DHEC). Yellow fever vaccination is required for entry into several countries and recommended for others. It is available by appointment on Thursdays.

Schedule your appointment 4–8 weeks before your departure date. A minimum of 3 weeks is required when vaccines are needed, as some vaccine series require multiple doses administered over time. Earlier scheduling also allows time for preventive medications to begin. If your travel is sooner, call us — we will do our best to accommodate your timeline.

Appointment requests can be made through MyChart, by phone at 843-876-2971, by email at inttravelhealth@musc.edu, or via the QR code displayed at our clinic location. The clinic sees patients on Thursdays by appointment only.

Please bring your travel itinerary (destination, dates, planned activities), a list of your current medications and dosages, known allergies, and your prior vaccination records. For children, bring your child's vaccination history. The more information you provide, the more tailored your consultation will be.

Yes. If you develop illness after returning from an international trip, our clinic offers follow-up evaluation for travel-related illness. We also provide booster vaccinations as needed. Contact the clinic by phone or email to schedule a post-travel appointment.

Pediatric travel health counseling covers age-appropriate vaccines, malaria prevention, food and water safety, insect protection, and air travel safety for young children. Travel-specific vaccines and consultations are typically not covered by health insurance. Routine vaccines (such as Tdap, MMR, and influenza) are often covered. Coverage for travel medications varies. Our team can provide an itemized receipt that you may submit to your insurer, and charges can be added to your MUSC patient account if needed.
