Comprehensive sports medicine services.

The Sports Medicine program at MUSC Health brings together leaders in a wide array of specialties committed to the care of athletes, including orthopaedic care, hand surgery, and primary care sports medicine. Our doctors, physical therapists, athletic trainers, nutritionists, sports psychologists, neurologists, and other specialists work together to address all aspects of your injury or condition. Our goal is to help you return to your previous level of activity quickly and safely.

This is the front-line of MUSC Health Sports Medicine. Athletic trainers are on the field when injuries occur and are often the first to evaluate and provide on-the-spot treatment and stabilization. When treatment by a sports medicine physician and/or physical therapist has concluded, athletes are often returned to the athletic trainer for sport-specific training and conditioning prior to returning to competition.

Sports physical therapy focuses on restoring the stamina, agility, stability, and strength of athletes to their pre-injury level of competition. MUSC Sports Medicine physical therapists work closely with physicians, surgeons, and other health care professionals to establish realistic goals and treatment plans designed to meet the sport-specific needs of our patients.

MUSC Health Sports Medicine has developed an injury prevention program based on current research and analysis of sport-specific injuries. Our approach focuses on age-group specific needs and physiologic maturity levels to teach athletes the proper form and techniques required for safe athletic participation. This method is primarily geared toward protecting the joints of the lower extremities and core, and can be adjusted for multiple sports. A variety of strengthening, flexibility, stabilization, and dynamic exercises will help to prevent injuries and enhance an athlete’s in-season and off-season training.

Our skilled Athletic Trainers and Physical Therapists can present this program to sports teams and groups and follow up with those participants to make sure they have been able to implement the program effectively. To schedule a training session for your team or group, call Margaret Gee at 843-876-1890.

Sports nutrition plays a big part in achieving peak performance. MUSC Health Sports Medicine provides athletes with customized plans for food and fluid intake designed to maximize power, strength, and endurance. Sport-specific consumption patterns are developed to match the demands of training, competition, and recovery.

MUSC Health Sports Medicine understands the unique aspects of female physiology. Our team includes specialists from women's health, pediatric and adult gynecology, rheumatology, endocrinology, and other areas committed to meeting the needs of the female athlete. Whether treating injuries, improving strength, and conditioning, or addressing nutritional concerns, MUSC Health Sports Medicine is well equipped to help women achieve their individual health or sport-specific goals.

Sports neurology addresses sport-related injuries to the brain, spinal cord, and nervous system. The MUSC Health Sports Medicine Program in collaboration with MUSC Health Neurosciences provides unmatched expertise in the diagnosis, evaluation, and treatment of these injuries including sports concussions. Coverage encompasses the full range of issues arising in the care of the neurologically impaired athlete, from diagnostic test, to prevention and treatment of injuries, from specific sports to current strategies for rehabilitation.

MUSC Health Sports Medicine provides state-of-the-art imaging, interpretation, and consultation in all types of musculoskeletal radiology, including computed tomography (CT), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), and ultrasound. But the latest technology is only as good as the people using it. The musculoskeletal radiologists at MUSC Health Sports Medicine are fellowship-trained, which means they have the highest level of training and expertise.
