Residency Program
PGY1 residency programs build upon Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm.D.) education and outcomes to develop pharmacist practitioners with knowledge, skills, and abilities as defined in the educational competency areas, goals, and objectives. Residents who successfully complete PGY1 residency programs will be skilled in diverse patient care, practice management, leadership, and education, and be prepared to provide patient care, seek board certification in pharmacotherapy (i.e., BCPS), and pursue advanced education and training opportunities including postgraduate year two (PGY2) residencies.
PGY2 pharmacy residency programs build on Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm.D.) education and PGY1 pharmacy residency programs to contribute to the development of clinical pharmacists in specialized areas of practice. PGY2 residencies provide residents with opportunities to function independently as practitioners by conceptualizing and integrating accumulated experience and knowledge and incorporating both into the provision of patient care or other advanced practice settings. Residents who successfully complete an accredited PGY2 pharmacy residency are prepared for advanced patient care, academic, or other specialized positions, along with board certification, if available.

See the PGY1 Pharmacy page for key details regarding program structure and PGY1 completion requirements. The PGY1 year for HSPAL is specifically crafted for a successful year with supportive preceptors of the MS commitments as well as thoughtful timing and administrative-focused elective rotations.
PGY2 year: During the PGY2 year of the combined 2-year HSPAL PGY1/2 Pharmacy Residency the resident works collaboratively with MUSC Health pharmacy management team, leading process improvement projects, chair a subcommittee of the P&T committee, and staff in one of the 24-hour pharmacies to continue building on the clinical skills from the PGY1 year. The resident will be assigned a pharmacy area to manage to develop additional skills in human resources and financial budgeting and planning. The longitudinal structure in the PGY2 year will develop competence in high level managerial, supervisory, and leadership responsibilities. Concentrated experiences or projects with members of the management team will be conducted in the resident’s area of interest as well as within the needs of the medical center.
