More About The Program

Welcome Message from the Program Director

Thank you for your interest in the MUSC Florence Internal Medicine Residency Program. Our program will be rigorous yet supportive and flexible, with training fit to meet the unique needs of each resident. We value curiosity, teamwork, and compassion in an environment where learning medicine goes hand in hand with growing as both a physician and a person.

We are fortunate to work with exceptional residents and faculty who are bright, compassionate, and deeply committed to patient care. It is their different backgrounds and perspectives that truly make our learning environment rich and strengthen the spirit of collaboration that defines our program.

Another strength is the wide and diverse patient population that we serve, representing meaningful clinical exposure and a wide range of learning opportunities. We pride ourselves on the quality of teaching, the depth of clinical training, and strong support we have for one another.
I invite you to explore our website to learn more about what makes our program special and to meet the incredible team that brings our mission to life.

Program Mission Statement

The mission of MUSC Health Florence Medical Center Internal Medicine Residency Program (FMC IMRP) is to educate and prepare internists in the entire breadth and depth of internal medicine practice. Using our regional resources and those of the entire Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC) system, we will train physicians with the clinical, personal, professional, and interdisciplinary competencies to provide exceptional patient care.

Our graduates will improve access, health outcomes and the quality of care in the communities they serve, with special focus on rural and medically underserved areas.

Program Aims

  1. Provide internists with the comprehensive knowledge, skills, attitudes and experience necessary for the practice of internal medicine;
  2. Prepare internists with the knowledge, skills, attitudes and experience to utilize telehealth, integrate new technologies, data management science, and current evidenced based medicine into their practice;
  3. Prepare internists with the knowledge, skills, attitudes and experience to improve disparities in health care;
  4. Prepare internists for team-based care, lifelong learning, self-reflection, practice improvement and system level safety and quality improvement;
  5. Prepare internists with the communication skills to counsel and educate patients and their families, populations and other health professionals;
  6. Create a supportive learning environment that is flexible and can adapt to the learners’ individual interests and professional goals.

The Department of Internal Medicine at MUSC Florence Medical Center is committed to training physicians who are clinically strong, professionally grounded, and well-prepared to deliver exceptional, compassionate care. They improve access to health care, strengthen patient outcomes, and elevate the quality of care in the communities they serve, especially in rural and medically underserved areas.

Residents participate in a wide range of clinical experiences in the broad areas of ward services, the intensive care unit, specialty clinics, outpatient internal medicine, and the emergency department. Rotations occur at the MUSC Health Florence Medical Center and the MUSC Health Jean and Hugh K. Leatherman Behavioral Health Pavilion. These experiences contribute both in caring for patients in the hospital and then following up and providing continued comprehensive care for patients post-discharge.

Using our regional resources and those of the entire Medical University of South Carolina system, we will train physicians with the clinical, personal, professional, and interdisciplinary competencies to provide compassionate and high value patient care.
