A program is its people long before it is its curriculum. This is what ours are like.
Dr. Eduardo Donato, Faculty of the Quarter
Dr. Donato has been a remarkable core faculty and a highly valued member of our residency program. He guides the residents with great kindness, respect, and positivity. He listens to the residents, shows each person dignity, and creates a favorable environment for their learning and development.
With the expansion of our residency program, he has taken up additional roles and responsibilities without any reluctance. His dedication, professionalism, and devotion to the education of residents have contributed immensely to the success of the program.
He has been a remarkable facilitator of morning reports. The residents appreciate his excellent clinical skills, mentorship, teaching methods, and great sense of humor. Learning with him has been highly beneficial and enjoyable experience for our trainees.
He is really unique, and we feel privileged and proud to be associated with such faculty member.
You're known as a person, not a number. ”
Patients recognize you, trust you, and make this feel like home. ”
What I love about FMC is that leadership and big career goals are genuinely supported here. ”
Wellness is woven into the fabric of our culture, and residents are truly at the forefront. Year-round, residents initiate and host numerous wellness activities: everything from casual gatherings and game nights to outdoor events, fitness challenges, and community service projects. These activities are resident-driven and serve to help everyone unwind, connect with, and support each other outside of the clinical environment. The aim is straightforward-to make room for friendship, balance, and joy in a challenging training journey. Wellness efforts led by residents at our institution strengthen camaraderie, promote resilience, and remind us that taking care of ourselves and each other is just as important as taking care of our patients.
Each year, residents vote to elect a Wellness Champion who serves with our faculty wellness champion to lead and expand these programs.
At MUSC Florence, we further promote wellness with healthy meal options, free fitness center access, and other resources, including the Employee Assistance Program and the Center for Workplace Well-Being-supported through an on-site program coordinator committed to wellness.
Our residents in the Internal Medicine Residency Program play an active and meaningful role in shaping the program. Each year, residents are selected by their peers for several leadership positions, including serving in the Program Evaluation Committee (PEC) and the Residents' Council.
Residents on the PEC work with faculty to review curriculum, evaluations, and overall quality of programs. Their insight ensures that resident needs, ideas, and experiences directly shape program development.
Another key avenue of leadership is through the Residents' Council. Council members are representatives of their peers, bring forward concerns or suggestions, and work closely with program leadership to improve the training environment. This structure fosters open communication, shared decision-making, and ownership in the program.
These leadership opportunities nurture valuable skills in our residents while enhancing the culture of collaboration, transparency, and continuous improvement that defines our residency.
We believe residents thrive when they love where they learn and feel valued, heard, and respected. Our program is built on a strong culture of feedback. We maintain an open-door policy, and residents can share concerns through formal channels and through the Residents' Council. The Council President brings these concerns to program leadership who work collaboratively to develop an appropriate plan.
We're a tight-knit, friendly crew who love what we do and love doing it together. Here, you'll find co-residents who feel more like friends, attendings who actually know your name, and a team that celebrates wins, big or small, every step of the way.
Life in Florence isn't just about medicine; it's about community. From coffee runs to shared laughs and support on busy days, we've got each other's backs. We can't wait to meet you, welcome you into our family, and share all the fun that makes MUSC Florence so special.
