Key Tenets of the Affiliate Network

  • Health care is best provided locally. To ensure this is possible, we will work with Affiliates to capitalize on their strengths and grow their clinical capabilities.
  • For care that cannot be provided locally, we commit to timely patient access and timely, personal communication with referring physicians, supported by technology where appropriate.
  • Physician-to-physician relationships are essential to any affiliate relationship. They will be prioritized through regular communication and collaboration.
  • Affiliate relationships will be coordinated by a dedicated relationship manager. Integrated Centers of Clinical Excellence (ICCE) Chiefs (MUSC’s physician service line leaders) will be accountable for the delivery of all clinical services.
  • Affiliation agreements will contain clearly defined benefits and requirements to ensure that alignment and accountability are equally owned by both parties.

Benefits of Partnering with MUSC

MUSC provides health care organizations with opportunities to better serve their local communities and keep care in South Carolina, including:

  • Support in the continual enhancement of clinical care programs and services for the community
  • Assurance of continuity of care for patients that require tertiary or quaternary services
  • VIP expedited access to hospitals, clinics, and health care providers throughout MUSC Health
  • Greater leverage for contract negotiations and purchasing agreements (participation in a GPO)
  • Utilization of cobranding when appropriate to leverage the recognition and reputation of MUSC within your community
  • Support for population health initiatives including clinically integrated networks (CIN), ACOs, etc.

We view each collaboration with an affiliate as an opportunity to find the best ways of providing health care services through partnership and innovation. Collaboration with our clinical affiliates includes, but is not limited to, the following:

  • Integrating clinical programs, i.e., regional service lines, when appropriate, joint physician and clinical support recruiting and novel care delivery and telehealth programs
  • Telehealth: Direct patient clinical connections, i.e., consultations, and tumor board participation; Provider Tele access to CME and other CE offerings
  • Quality metric initiatives
  • Sharing the latest clinical protocols
  • Sharing practice management best practices and resource support
  • Shared IT capabilities

The MUSC College of Medicine is eager to explore partnerships in clinical education with qualified health care entities. The co-development of designated teaching hospitals and clinical preceptors results in long term benefits to the facility and the community it serves including improving quality of care and creating a pipeline of talented early career healthcare team members — a particularly welcome asset in light of increasing health care demands. Affiliate providers also benefit from continuing medical education, participation in grand rounds and ongoing consults.

AnMed

AnMed and the Medical University of South Carolina College of Medicine have partnered to create an innovative Clinical Education Program at AnMed for medical students. Through the partnership, selected third- and fourth-year MUSC students will complete their final two years of education at AnMed in a curriculum designed to emphasize patient-centered primary care. Expanding medical education opportunities for students interested in primary care can improve access to care in South Carolina.

Hollings Cancer Center – South Carolina’s Only NCI-Designated Cancer Center

Research affiliations with MUSC Health allow other health care entities to access MUSC Health-based clinical trials, either as co-participants or as direct access points for their patients.

The Hollings Cancer Center Clinical Trials Network (CTN) represents a partnership of quality cancer centers dedicated to the promotion of cancer research. By establishing a collaborative infrastructure of physicians, clinical trials offices, and patients, the CTN reaches large and diverse patient populations, which increases the rate of trial enrollment — a key to the success of any clinical trial.

The CTN caters to both the clinical trial site and research sponsor. MUSC Health can design a unique service plan to meet your organization’s needs. CTN members gain access to a number of unique clinical trials, which may include trials developed at the Hollings Cancer Center, e.g., our investigator-initiated trials. Members also have the opportunity to participate in other phase II and phase III studies made available to the CTN through MUSC Health’s academic or industrial partnerships.
