Internal Medicine Residency Program at MUSC Health Columbia

Start something that lasts. Leave a legacy for every resident who follows.

Welcome from the Program Director

Thank you for your interest in our new Internal Medicine Residency at MUSC Columbia Downtown Medical Center. Our program combines a structured and supportive learning environment with meaningful clinical autonomy, giving residents the skills and confidence to care for a diverse patient population with complex needs.

We are passionate about mentoring future physicians and helping them grow not only as clinicians but also as teachers, leaders, and scholars. Our residents will work closely with hospitalists, primary care physicians, and subspecialists across a wide range of services, gaining exposure to both inpatient and outpatient medicine. Through this training, they will develop strong procedural skills, clinical judgment, and a commitment to compassionate and patient-centered care.

At MUSC Columbia Downtown Medical Center, residents will benefit from caring for patients and learning in a community-based hospital setting, while being able to draw upon the resources of MUSC, the premier hospital system and medical university in South Carolina. This environment exposes trainees to a wide spectrum of disease presentations in the Midlands and fosters independence, adaptability, and a deeper understanding of community health needs, while providing the backing and educational opportunities of a medical university. This combination gives a “best of both worlds” experience.

Beyond clinical care, our residents will be actively engaged in simulation, point of care ultrasound training, research, quality improvement, and scholarly presentations. These opportunities will not only prepare them for potential fellowship applications but also foster lifelong learning and professional growth. Equally important, our residents will receive mentorship and coaching throughout all three years of training. We want every resident to feel and be supported, both professionally and personally, throughout his or her residency journey.

I am honored to be the Founding Program Director of a residency program that will prepare physicians to serve, teach, and lead in their communities. I invite you to learn more about our program and consider joining us as you shape your future career in Internal Medicine.

Our Mission

Here for South Carolina, and every patient who calls it home.

The Medical University of South Carolina Regional Network (MUSC RN) Program in Internal Medicine at MUSC Health Columbia Medical Center Downtown reflects the MUSC Health system’s mission to preserve and optimize human life in South Carolina and beyond and its current three-pronged strategy for the future in empowering healthy communities, driving innovation and health transformation, and reshaping the future workforce. As an integral part of the health system across the State, the MUSC RN as the sponsoring institution is committed to leading innovative programs where physicians in training develop the clinical, personal and professional competence to provide exceptional patient care in the communities they serve with special focus on rural and underserved areas and populations.

The Internal Medicine program utilizes local resources in the Midlands of South Carolina and those of the entire MUSC network to prepare the next generation of internal medicine physicians with the knowledge, skills, attitudes, and experience to prevent illness, promote wellbeing, and alleviate suffering from acute, chronic, and complex diseases. Graduates will be well prepared to lead and serve in both urban and rural settings, addressing the medical needs of patients in medically underserved and under-resourced communities.

Columbia Community

A capital city with a hometown heart.

Columbia, South Carolina sits at the geographic heart of the state and carries the comfortable confidence of a city that knows exactly what it is — a mid-sized Southern capital where college football is practically a religion, the pace is unhurried but never sleepy, and strangers still make eye contact and say hello. As home to the University of South Carolina, the city pulses with the energy of a large student population that keeps the food, music, and arts scenes lively year-round, while the presence of Fort Jackson and a growing healthcare and tech corridor give it an economic steadiness that feels grounded.

The summers are hot and humid — locals will tell you that upfront — but the mild winters more than make up for it, and the city's sprawling Congaree River greenway, proximity to Lake Murray, and the beloved Soda City farmers market on Main Street speak to a community that genuinely enjoys being outside and together. Columbia doesn't try to be Charlotte or Atlanta; it's a place where you can get a table at a great restaurant without a reservation, buy a house with a real backyard, and still find yourself at a nationally recognized art museum or a packed arena concert on a Saturday night — a city with real amenities and a refreshingly small-city soul.

The resident that will thrive here is somebody that doesn't want to be just a participant. We want somebody that wants to be a builder, that wants their input to mean something.
