MUSC Health's Weight Loss Surgery Program performs the following primary surgical procedures for treating severe obesity. For those considering other alternatives, the MUSC Weight Management Center offers a wide range of non-surgical and research programs for those individuals who decide that bariatric surgery is not for them.
Sleeve gastrectomy is a restrictive procedure, similar to a partial gastrectomy, removing part of the stomach and leaving a long, thin, tube-shaped (sleeve) stomach.
Roux-en-Y gastric bypass surgery divides the stomach, creating a small gastric pouch reconnected to the small intestine, creating restriction and less absorption.
The Single Anastomosis Duodenal-Ileal Bypass with Sleeve Gastrectomy, referred to as the SADI-S, is the most recent procedure endorsed by the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery. While similar to the BPD-DS, the SADI-S is simpler and takes less time to perform as there is only one surgical bowel connection.
(BPD/DS) After a sleeve gastrectomy is created, the small intestine is divided, and a connection is made near the bottom of the stomach and near the end of the small intestine.
In addition to your surgeons, we have a high-quality group of professionals working with you throughout your journey.
