What is urgent care?

Urgent care is walk-in medical care for non-life-threatening illness and injury that cannot wait for a scheduled primary care appointment. MUSC Health urgent care centers are open during extended hours, including evenings and weekends, with no appointment needed. Onsite lab and X-ray services are available at every location. MUSC Health also offers virtual urgent care options — chat and video — for conditions that do not require an in-person exam. Urgent care is appropriate for patients of all ages, from infants six months and older through adults.

What urgent care treats

MUSC Health urgent care centers treat a wide range of conditions, including: fever and flu, ear and sinus infections, urinary tract infections, minor lacerations requiring stitches, sprains and minor fractures, rashes and skin conditions, minor burns, and cold and COVID symptoms. For conditions that may require surgery, hospitalization, or emergency intervention, go to the nearest MUSC Health emergency room or call 911 immediately.

When to choose urgent care

Choose urgent care for non-life-threatening conditions that cannot wait for a primary care appointment. If you have a life-threatening emergency – such as chest pain, difficulty breathing, or stroke symptoms – call 911 or go to the nearest emergency room immediately.

Choose urgent Care For:

  • Fever, cold, flu, or COVID symptoms
  • Ear infection, sinus infection, or strep throat
  • Urinary tract infection (UTI)
  • Rash or skin condition
  • Minor cuts or lacerations needing stitches
  • Sprain or minor fracture
  • Minor burn
  • Pink eye (conjunctivitis)
  • Nausea, vomiting, or diarrhea — without signs of dehydration

Go to the ER or Call 911 For:

  • Chest pain or pressure
  • Difficulty breathing or shortness of breath
  • Stroke symptoms — face drooping, arm weakness, slurred speech
  • Loss of consciousness
  • Severe allergic reaction
  • Major trauma — car accident, severe fall, or serious injury

Not sure if you need urgent care or the ER?

MUSC Health emergency and urgent care offers both emergency and urgent care under one roof — at community locations across South Carolina, not just hospital campuses. Walk in and an emergency-trained physician will evaluate you and direct you to the right level of care. You're only billed for the level of care you receive.
