What is the NextSteps program?

NextSteps is MUSC Health's free, interactive online program that helps trauma injury survivors manage their recovery, rebuild confidence, and navigate life after a serious injury, available at any time from any location through nextstepsonline.org.

A serious injury can change the path you expected your life to take. NextSteps is designed to meet you where you are — helping you understand where you are in your recovery, explore the ways your life has changed, and develop the skills and confidence to move forward. It is self-paced, online, and designed to work alongside — not replace — your medical care and individual counseling.

NextSteps uses evidence-based techniques proven to increase self-confidence and feelings of empowerment after traumatic injury. The program lets you work through structured lessons and connect with others facing similar challenges, all in your own time and surroundings. Contact the Trauma Survivors Network at MUSC Health to learn more or to get started: 843-792-8401 or traumasurvivors@musc.edu.

How NextSteps works

NextSteps is offered free of charge to trauma injury survivors. No referral or insurance is required to participate.

Is NextSteps right for you?

NextSteps is designed for people who have experienced a serious injury and are in the recovery phase — whether that is days, weeks, or months after your hospital stay. If you are dealing with uncertainty about your recovery, struggling to get back to your previous life, or looking for tools to build confidence and manage your situation, NextSteps may be a good fit.

NextSteps is not a crisis or emergency resource. If you are experiencing a medical emergency, call 911. If you are struggling with depression, anxiety, or trauma symptoms related to your injury, we encourage you to also connect with our Trauma Resilience and Recovery Program (TRRP), which offers mental health screening and counseling for trauma injury patients.

NextSteps is free and does not require a referral or clinical enrollment. You can register directly at nextstepsonline.org or contact the Trauma Survivors Network at traumasurvivors@musc.edu or 843-792-8401 for help getting started.
