Four types of Disability Plans are offered at the Medical Center:
- Basic Long Term Disability
- Supplemental Long Term Disability (SLTD)
- South Carolina Disability Retirement
- Long Term Care Insurance (LTC)
Basic Long Term Disability
The Basic Long Term Disability Plan (BLTD) administered by Standard Insurance Company, is an employer-funded disability plan provided by the state. It helps you protect a portion of your income if you become disabled.

Overview of Available Long Term Disability Benefits
Benefit waiting period: 90 days
Monthly benefit percentage: 62.5 percentage of your predisability earnings, reduced by deductible income
Maximum benefit: $800 per month
Maximum benefit period: To age 65 if you become disabled before age 62. If you become disabled at age 62 or older, the maximum benefit period is based on your age at the time of the disability. The maximum benefit period for age 69 and older is one year.
Supplemental Long Term Disability (SLTD)
SLTD insurance is designed to provide additional financial assistance if you become disabled. Your benefit will be based on a percentage of your predisability earnings. This program is administered by the Standard Insurance Company. This plan is summarized below:

Benefit waiting period:
Plan one: 90 days
Plan two: 180 days
Monthly benefit percentage: 65 percentage of the first $12,307 of your predisability earnings, reduced by deductible income
Minimum benefit: $100 per month
Maximum benefit: $8,000 per month
Maximum benefit period: To age 65 if you become disabled before age 62. If you become disabled at age 62 or older, the maximum benefit period is based on your age at the time of disability. The maximum benefit period for age 69 and older is one year.
Monthly premium rate: Calculated based on your age, plan selection, and monthly earnings
Maximum SLTD covered predisability earnings:$12,307 per month
South Carolina Disability Retirement
You may be eligible for Disability Retirement if you meet all of the following criteria*:
- You are a South Carolina Retirement System member or Police Officers Retirement System member who is in service
- You have at least five years of earned service credit
- Your disability is likely to be permanent
- You are still on your employer's payroll
*Different rules may apply for on-the-job injuries.
You should file your application for disability retirement as soon as you become disabled and before you are removed from your employer's payroll.
