Laser Therapy

What Is Vaginal Atrophy?

When estrogen levels decline after menopause, many changes occur. Millions of women experience changes in their vaginal health that interfere with their personal lives as a consequence. Many women suffer silently, and those who seek treatment find
their options limited. Vaginal atrophy, or vaginal ageing, affects in excess of 40% of menopausal and post-menopausal women. The walls of the vagina become thinner and the natural elasticity, hydration and blood supply is reduced. These symptoms can also occur as the result of breast cancer treatments and hysterectomy.

The symptoms of vaginal atrophy may include:

  • Vaginal dryness, itchiness or pain
  • Burning sensations and irritation of the vagina
  • Fissuring of the opening of the vagina
  • Pain during sexual intercourse (Dyspareunia)

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: How does it work?

MonaLisa Touch delivers gentle laser energy to the vaginal wall tissue that stimulates a healing response in the vaginal canal. A typical course of treatment is three procedures with six-week intervals. Many women report symptom relief after the very first
treatment and even greater improvement after treatments 2 and 3.

Q: Who is the MonaLisa Touch for?

Post-menopausal women experiencing painful symptoms of menopause and challenges with intimacy. Any female that has undergone chemically or surgically induced menopause. It can also be used to treat similar side effects in women who have
undergone a hysterectomy or breast cancer treatments.

Q: What happens during treatment?

The procedure will seem similar to your annual gynecologic exam, and will likely be even quicker. Your healthcare provider will insert the laser into your vagina and deliver laser energy “pulses.” The total procedure time is less than 5 minutes.

Q: Does it hurt?

The laser energy itself is virtually painless. Some patients report mild discomfort with the laser tip insertion during the first procedure if there is gynecologic dryness.

Q: How soon can I expect results and how long does treatment last?

Many patients have reported that they experience relief right away. Virtually all patients have experienced relief by the second treatment. An ongoing annual, single treatment is recommended to maintain symptom relief.*
