Meet Mary Kate Bryant, M.D., MSCR

The MUSC Metabolic & Bariatric Surgery Program welcomes Dr. Mary Kate Bryant, a fellowship-trained bariatric surgeon to our team.

Mary Kate Bryant, M.D.

A native of Alabama, Dr. Bryant’s journey in medicine began with a medical degree from the University of Alabama School of Medicine before completing her general surgery residency at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Following residency, Dr. Bryant pursued advanced training in Gastrointestinal Minimally Invasive Surgery and Bariatric Surgery at the University of Washington in Seattle, WA. While most of her practice is bariatric surgery, she is also trained in antireflux surgery, hernia surgery, and general surgery.

During her medical training, she completed a Masters of Science in Clinical Research at the UNC School of Public Health and won several research awards. She continues to do research, specifically on health disparities and access in the bariatric population. She is an active member of several surgical societies including the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery, Society of American Gastrointestinal and Endoscopic Surgeons, and American Medical Women’s Association.

She is a strong advocate for patient education and seeks to lessen anxieties around bariatric surgery. As 80% of patients seeking bariatric surgery are women, she enjoys connecting with women throughout their bariatric surgery journey and seeing how bariatric surgery changes their lives and their families’ lives.

Outside of work, she enjoys traveling, Peloton classes, and hanging out with her French bulldog named Cheese.

Dr. Bryant's expertise and enthusiasm will undoubtedly contribute to the ongoing success of the MUSC Metabolic & Bariatric Surgery Program. We look forward to the positive impact she will make on the lives of patients and the MUSC community at large.
