Junior Volunteers

Summer 2023

Five weeks from June 19 through July 21.

The goal of our Junior Volunteer Program is to provide highly motivated students (ages 14 to 18) who are possibly interested in health care or other real-world experience with an opportunity to learn, help others, and give back. The program also helps departments that could use extra hands. Volunteering as a junior volunteer can be a great way to spend your summer.

Applications will be accepted from March 22 through April 28. The link to apply will be available no later than March 22.

Interviews will be May 2 through 5.

Volunteers must check in and out each day. They are not allowed to leave the hospital during their shift. Transportation must be provided and volunteer needs to be picked up at the end of their shift. A parent or guardian signature will be required on permission to participate form for students under the age of 18.

Application Requirements

Acceptance into the program requires the completion of the following steps:

  • Must be a least 14 years of age by the date of orientation.
  • Completed online application.
  • Interview in-person at the Downtown location.
  • Health screening by MUSC Employee Health (includes blood draw for TB test).
  • Immunization records: 2 MMR, 2 Varicella, Tdap, 3 Hep B, and COVID-19, must be submitted during health screening for successful clearance.
  • One letter of recommendation (teacher, guidance counselor, employer, leader of an organization student is involved in, etc.) brought in during the interview.
  • Orientation will be held in person at the MUSC Downtown location. This is a mandatory training. Date and time to be announced.
  • Volunteer placements will depend on the student’s interest and location. The downtown location will serve as the base for summer volunteers.

What will volunteers do?

Volunteers will work a 3.5 hour shift at least one day each week. There is the opportunity to volunteer for more than one day.

Shifts are Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 12 p.m. or 12:30 p.m. to 4 p.m.

Each volunteer will be issued a Candy Striper apron to wear while volunteering. The apron is on loan to the volunteer and must be returned at the end of the summer.

Volunteers will receive a meal ticket on the day they volunteer for lunch.
