Supporting Health Improvement Nutrition and Exercise (SHINE) Program

The SHINE program is based on the Prevent T2 curriculum developed by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention with the primary goal for all participants to maintain 150 minutes of exercise each week and lose 5%-7%+ body weight. 

Topics include:

  • Getting active
  • Tracking your diet, activity and weight
  • Shopping and cooking for weight loss and prevention of Type 2 Diabetes
  • Managing stress
  • And much more!

The SHINE program is divided into 2 phases:

  1. Core - weekly 60 minute sessions for the first 4 months
  2. Core Maintenance – 2 sessions per month for 6 months. Participants can attend weekly in this phase if they choose, but it is not required.

Location and Times

When: Tuesdays 10:00 am to 11:00 am for Phase 1 (months 1-4) and 11:00 am-12 pm for Phase 2 (months 5-12)

Where: Citadel Mall, Sam Rittenberg Blvd., West Ashley

The Reserve Community Room (near Belk, inside the mall)

Kickoff Meeting: Tuesday, February 26, 2019 at 10 am.

Eligibility

Adults (over age 18) with a diagnosis of pre-diabetes may be able to participate in this program. You may have a diagnosis of pre-diabetes if you have a fasting glucose of 100-125 mg/dL, two-hour plasma glucose of 140-199 mg/dL, or a hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) of 5.7-6.4%. Additionally participants should have a body mass index (BMI) above 25 kg/m2 (or above 23 kg/m2 if Asian).
