Pulmonary Clinical Trials

Lung Disease Clinical Research

Many of today's standard treatments in pulmonary diseases are the direct result from clinical research studies. A clinical trial is a research study designed to evaluate a new treatment.

The MUSC Division of Pulmonary, Critical Care, Allergy and Sleep Medicine is actively involved in clinical research that advances the understanding and treatment of patients with respiratory diseases. Through our clinical and research efforts, patients have gained access to emerging treatment options for a variety of diseases including cystic fibrosis, idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis, pulmonary arterial hypertension, sarcoidosis, and sepsis.

Our research program leverages the unique resources available within the South Carolina Clinical & Translational Research (SCTR) Institute based at MUSC — allowing us to fast-forward scientific discoveries by streamlining clinical trials so that patients can benefit sooner from research breakthroughs.

Clinical Trials for Patients with Lung Disease

What is a clinical trial?
A clinical trial is a research study designed to evaluate a new treatment. While most trials involve medications, others study devices, procedures and even surgery. Clinical trials are closely monitored by the physicians, other researchers and the FDA to ensure patient safety.

Why participate in clinical trials?
Participation in clinical trials offers patients the option of a new and potentially better treatment that would not be otherwise available. By participating in a clinical trial, patients can contribute to scientific understanding and gain access to new treatments.

Current Clinical Trials

The MUSC Division of Pulmonary, Critical Care, Allergy and Sleep Medicine offers patients access to new therapies through participation in carefully designed clinical trials.
