A Patient's Rights

Patients have the right to:

  • Considerate, respectful, and confidential treatment.
  • An explanation of the benefits of recommended treatment verses alternate and the risks of receiving no treatment.
  • Emergency, incremental, and comprehensive patient care.
  • Information about the cost of treatment and informed consent for the specified treatment.
  • Treatment that meets the established standards of care.
  • Access to the Patient Care Coordinator for concerns and complaints.
  • View and keep a copy of the Medical University of South Carolina’s Notice of Privacy Practices.
  • Access or obtain copies of their health and / or treatment information. This can be accomplished through contacting 843-876-SMIL(E) or asking for the Records Department.
  • Request restrictions on disclosures of protected health information for treatment, payment, and health care operations.
  • Receive an accounting of disclosures of their health information for purposes other than treatment, payment, or health care operations.
  • Request amendments to incorrect or incomplete medical information.
  • Request alternative (confidential) communications concerning their health information.
  • Referral to the HIPAA Contact person for concerns about privacy violations.
