Resident Care

Dental treatment is provided by resident dentists who have completed their general dentistry education and who are now at MUSC for specialty or advanced training. Patients may be accepted into a residency clinic or placed into another one of our care options, depending on the complexity of their case. College of Dental Medicine faculty members direct and supervise all clinics.

The residents in these clinics are pursuing specialty or advanced training In digital dentistry, general dentistry, endodontics, pediatrics, periodontics, orthodontics, or oral surgery.

Services

Digital Dentistry

MUSC's unique post-doctoral program in Digital Dentistry is the first full-time program of its kind worldwide. Residents provide a range of prosthodontic treatments using advanced digital systems and technologies.

Services include:

  • Implant crowns
  • Aesthetic dentistry and 3-D smile design
  • Computer-assisted design and manufacturing (CAD/CAM) of restorations, such as:
    • Same-day milled and 3-D printed dentures (Removable prosthodontics)
    • Same-day milled and 3-D printed crowns, bridges, and veneers
  • Full mouth rehabilitation (For toothlessness, or edentulism)

Endodontics

Endodontics is the treatment of infected teeth by cleaning, disinfecting, and filling root canals. Endodontics also covers root end surgery, known as apicoectomy.

General Dentistry

The care available from residents in the Advanced Education in General Dentistry training program is comprehensive in nature and similar to the care one would receive in a private practice general dentistry office.

Consultations with other MUSC dentistry specialists are common, providing convenient second opinions for patients with complex issues. At times patient care may involve coordination with other specialty clinics within the MUSC campus.

Periodontics is the prevention and treatment of diseases of the gingival (gums) and the bone surrounding and supporting the teeth. Treatments can include:
