  • Social Security pays benefits to people who cannot work because they have a medical condition that is expected to last at least one year or result in death. The Social Security Web site ( is easy to use if you apply for Supplemental Security Income (SSI). You can call 800-772-1213 or call your local Social Security office. It takes many months to process an application, so it is a good idea to get started quickly.
