Endometriosis, Adenomyosis & Fibroids

At the MUSC Women's Health Endometriosis and MIGS Center, our mission is to serve as a resource for women and health care providers to improve the quality of care we provide for women with complex benign gynecologic conditions. We are here to help women seeking minimally invasive gynecologic surgery for painful conditions associated with endometriosis, adenomyosis and fibroids.

Conditions We Treat

At the Endometriosis and MIGS Center, we treat serious conditions including:

  • Endometriosis
  • Adenomyosis
  • Fibroids
  • Pelvic pain
  • Heavy menstrual bleeding and anemia
  • Benign leiomyomatosis
  • Complex pelvic adhesive disease
  • Uterine anomalies

What is Endometriosis and Adenomyosis?

Endometriosis is a relatively common condition where the cells that are normally found inside of the uterine lining (endometrial cells) are located outside of the uterus- on the fallopian tube, ovaries, pelvis, bowel, bladder, or even in other more remote locations in the body. Adenomyosis is a related condition that involves endometrial cells growing within the muscular/inner wall of the uterus itself.

What are the Symptoms of Endometriosis and Adenomyosis?

Both endometriosis and adenomyosis are common causes of pelvic pain and painful periods for women. Some patients with endometriosis have no symptoms at all, but others may experience:

  • Pain with periods
  • Pain with sex
  • Pelvic pain outside of menstruation
  • Struggles with infertility

The diagnosis of these conditions can be challenging and nuanced, often leading to a long time between when women start experiencing symptoms of the disease until they are ultimately diagnosed with endometriosis. There are many different treatment options available for patients who suffer from this condition, including both medical treatment options and surgery.

What are Fibroids?

Fibroids are common benign tumors of the uterus. Like endometriosis, fibroids sometimes cause no symptoms at all, but often can lead to pelvic pain or other troublesome symptoms such as heavy menstrual bleeding and anemia. Fibroids may also pose problems for fertility and pregnancy. There are many successful treatment options available to reduce the symptoms of fibroids and/or remove fibroids, such as medical treatments, or surgery to remove the fibroids or to achieve a hysterectomy.
